Entamoeba moshkovskii perspectives of a new agent to be considered in the diagnosis of amebiasis

► The history, epidemiology and clinical perspectives of E. moshkovskii are reviewed. ► E. moshkovskii is morphologically indistinguishable from E. histolytica/E. dispar. ► The diagnosis of this infection can only be achieved through molecular methods. ► This infection has aroused the need to reassess the amebiasis epidemiology. ► Studies are needed to clarify the pathogenic role of this species.
