Variable geographic distribution of Blastocystis subtypes and its potential implications

► Blastocystis consists of genetically distinct genetic entities called subtypes. ► Subtypes have been studied in various parts of the world but large gaps remain. ► We have sampled populations in three countries in Africa not previously examined. ► Significant differences exist between geographic regions although trends can be seen.
