► We review Trichinellaspp infection in humans, livestock and wildlife in sub-Saharan Africa. ► The possible life cycles of the major species occurring in sub-Saharan Africa is postulated. ► The possible sources of human infection in sub-Saharan Africa. ► The reasons for an increase in the risk of human trichinellosis in the regionare hypothesized. ► Surveillance of Trichinella infection in wildlife hosts from protected areas is recommended.
