► We here review the future priority research on plant-virus-vector interactions. ► Receptor of viruses in vectors remains unknown and are most highly wanted molecules. ► The role of vector saliva has been overlooked thus far and awaits intensified investigation. ► Plant viruses prepare uptake by the vector through dedicated interaction with host cells. ► Plant viruses might produce 'morphs' specialized in vector transmission.
