Rapid detection and identification of viroids in the genus Coleviroid using a universal probe

► We designed a universal probe (8CCR probe) for detecting coleus viroids. ► The 8CCR probe was derived from the central conserved region of coleus viroids. ► The 8CCR probe can detect and identify at least 4 different CbVd species simultaneously. ► Hybridization using the 8CCR probe is highly efficient. ► This study can potentially be extended to the detection of other important viroids and viruses.
