Rapid detection and typing of Molluscum contagiosum virus by FRET-based real-time PCR

► A FRET-based real-time PCR was developed for sensitive and specific detection of MCV. ► It allows reliable differentiation of the two MCV genetic lineages MCV1 and MCV2. ► The assay was validated on defined plasmid standards and clinical samples. ► The sensitivity of the assay was 3.3 viral copies/reaction; dynamic range was 10-109 viral copies/reaction. ► The novel assay is suitable for diagnostic application and epidemiological studies.
