Detection of foot-and-mouth disease virus in the breath of infected cattle using a hand-held device to collect aerosols

► We test the performance of a chip-based air sampler. ► The air sampler allows sensitive sampling and detection of FMDV in breath of infected cattle. ► The sensitivity of the air sampler can be improved. ► The in-cip integration of sampling and detection adds new perspectives in identification of contagious animals.
