Degree of anemia correlates with increased utilization of heme by Leishmania donovani parasites in visceral leishmaniasis

Hb binding profile on CD163 receptor of macrophage and changes after blocking of CD163 receptor in VL patients (under different anemic stage). Showing high binding of Hb on macrophage which was sensitized with parasites, in comparison to macrophages on which CD163 was blocked. VL patients were categorized in to more severe anemic (5.8-7.9 g/dl) and less severe anemic (7.9-10.2 g/dl). Data shown are the mean ± SD from 7 independent experiments.
