Prevalence of and management factors contributing to Cryptosporidium sp. infection in pre-weaned and post-weaned calves in Johor, Malaysia

► First study in Malaysia to determine the prevalence, genotypes and management factors related to Cryptosporidium infections in pre-weaned and post-weaned dairy cattle. ► Overall Cryptosporidium prevalence was 27.1%. ► C. parvum was most prevalent in pre-weaned and C. bovis was most prevalent in post-weaned calves. ► gp60 subtyping identified IIdA15G1, IIa18A3R1 and IIa17G2R1. ► Having other cattle farms close by, feeding calves with saleable milk, keeping pre-weaned calves in pens with slatted floors increased the risk of Cryptosporidium infection.
