Screening analysis of hundreds of sediment pollutants and evaluation of their effects on benthic organisms in Dokai Bay, Japan

► A novel comprehensive analytical method was applied to sediments in an enclosed bay. ► 184 out of approximately 900 organic chemicals were found. ► The density and biomass of benthic animals in the bay were quantified. ► PAHs and metals had concentrations higher than the sediment quality guidelines. ► Some contaminants seem to have an adverse effect on benthic animals. ► This comprehensive analytical method is a useful tool for environmental surveys.
