Oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury in the presence of secondary organic aerosols

► Gaseous elemental mercury was oxidized by ozone amidst secondary organic aerosol. ► Observed GEM oxidation corroborated published rate coefficients. ► Numerical model simulations compared well to the observed GEM oxidation. ► Study results indicate the GEM-ozone reaction pathway to be viable in the atmosphere.
