Continuous variability in thunderstorm primary electrification and an evaluation of inverted-polarity terminology

► We review recent observational results that discuss "inverted polarity" thunderstorms. ► We analyze a new negative strike dominant, high-precipitaiton supercell storm. ► A key thunderstorm electrification mechanism is not inverted but varies continuously. ► A combination, not simple inversion, of electrification regimes better fits observations. ► Recommendations for adjustments to polarity terminology are discussed.
