A comprehensive drought monitoring method integrating MODIS and TRMM data

► A synthesized drought index (SDI) integrating MODIS and TRMM data is proposed. ► A heavy drought process was explored using SDI in Shandong province, China. ► The accuracy of SDI was validated using meteorological and agricultural data. ► Precipitation, soil and vegetation should be considered in drought monitoring.
