Improving irrigated rice production in the Senegal River Valley through experiential learning and innovation

► SRI was compared to Recommended Management Practices (RMPs) and farmers' practices. ► SRI and RMP increased yield, but farmers found neither system to be a good fit. ► Farmers and researchers collaborated to develop a “Farmer Adapted Practice” (FAP). ► FAP, SRI and RMP yielded similarly, but FAP increased profit and reduced risk. ► Experiential learning can be used in research and extension to foster innovation.
