Iron and chromium modified aluminosilicate microstructure adsorbents (Fe2O3-MSU-S and CrO2-MSU-S) were prepared in order to selectively remove nitrogen compounds from model fuel containing quinoline, carbazole, benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene. The results demonstrated that iron modification can enhance the quinoline and carbazole uptake of MSU-S by 38.8% and 24.5%, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of CrO2-MSU-S as compared to pristine MSU-S for quinoline and carbazole were improved by 22.4% and 21.1%, respectively. According to the equilibrium results, data fitting for quinoline and carbazole is achieved better by the Freundlich model than Langmuir model for CrO2-MSU-S and Fe2O3-MSU-S. The pseudo-second order model presented the best fitting of adsorption data for all species over each adsorbent compared to the pseudo-first order model. According to the breakthrough order, the adsorptive selectivity for the four adsorbates increases in the order of DBT < BT < carbazole < quinoline.
