► Metabolic engineering of Pseudomonas entomophila produced 3-hydroxyalkanoic acids. ► β-Oxidation and PHA synthase deletion with thioesterase over-expression was the key. ► 3-Hydroxytetradecanoic acid and 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid were produced efficiently.
