Consequences of alternative tree-level biomass estimation procedures on U.S. forest carbon stock estimates

► Comparison of tree biomass estimation approaches used in U.S. forest C reporting. ► CRM estimates of C stocks were significantly different from Jenkins estimates. ► The CRM decreased estimates of national C stocks by an average of 16%. ► Differences are due, in large part, to the incorporation of tree height in volume models. ► The CRM aligns NGHGI estimates of forest C with estimates of tree volume in the FIA database.
