New proton donors in electrochemical mechanistic studies in non-aqueous solution dimethylsulfoxide: Chlorinated hydroxybenzonitriles

► Chlorinated hydroxybenzonitriles were found to be efficient H+ donors in aprotic media. ► They are reduced at more negative potentials than common proton donors. ► Proton donation was also confirmed by theoretical calculations.
