Heat transfer in plug flow in cylindrical microcapillaries with constant surface heat flux

► Heat transfer in plugs in microcapillaries is enhanced by recirculating vortices. ► Three stages of the heat transfer process in plugs are identified. ► Higher Pe and shorter plug length result in higher Nu and lower fluid temperature. ► Pressure drop needs to be considered to optimize microchannel heat exchangers.
