Visual soil evaluation in relation to measured soil physical properties in a survey of grassland soil compaction in England and Wales

► A visual soil evaluation (VSE) survey of 300 grassland fields in England and Wales. ► Two VSE methods were used: the visual soil assessment method and the Peerlkamp method. ► The two visual evaluation methods produced largely consistent results. ► Around 10% of soils were in poor condition and 60% in moderate condition. ► VSE methods and other physical indicators of soil quality were correlated.
