The dark side of ubiquitous connectivity in smartphone-based SNS: An integrated model from information perspective

Based on protection motivation theory and information processing theory, this study explores the dark side of ubiquitous connectivity enabled by smartphone-based social network service (SNS). Specifically, two negative consequences of ubiquitous connectivity are proposed, namely, information leakage and information overload. The empirical results suggest that ubiquitous connectivity could increase SNS users' discontinuous usage intention though raising privacy concern and protection motivation, and through aggravating their information overload and SNS exhaustion. By integrating two influence paths from information perspective, the study provides new insights on the dark side of ubiquitous connectivity and practical suggestions for SNS users and providers.
