Plasmid DNA microgels for drug/gene co-delivery: A promising approach for cancer therapy

► Plasmid DNA (pDNA) was efficiently encapsulated into biocompatible microgels. ► Plasmid DNA and an anticancer drug, doxorubicin, have been successfully released from pDNA microgels. ► The release of pDNA is capable of transfection in vitro resulting in the expression of p53 protein. ► The treatment with a pDNA/doxorubicin loaded microgel improves cancer cell apoptosis. ► We developed a novel pDNA vehicle for cancer treatment through the combined action of chemotherapy and gene delivery approach.
