â¶ The CO2 reforming reaction on BSCF dense and asymmetric membrane show that reaction proceeds through a multi-step process which involves membrane oxygen reacting with hydrogen to form water leading to steam reforming. â¶ The catalyst and membrane have been shown to have a synergistic relationship. The close proximity of the catalyst and membrane is essential for high oxygen flux and increased catalyst performance. Spillover of oxygen is believed to play a significant role when high flux membranes are used. â¶ While both the dense and asymmetric membranes maintain mechanical stability under reaction conditions, the presence of a large amount of CO2 leads to the surface restructuring of the membrane, which decreases the oxygen flux. This restructuring is ascribed to the formation of the carbonate on the reaction surface of the membrane.
