Biotransformation of wheat straw to bacterial cellulose and its mechanism

► A novel approach to recycle lignocellulosics, reduce environmental problems and convert agro-residues to high value-added biomaterials. ► Wheat straw was used to produce bacterial cellulose by enzymatic hydrolysis. ► [AMIM]Cl was chosen to pretreat wheat straw to enhance enzymatic saccharification. ► Several influence factors on the ionic liquid pretreatment were investigated. ► Mechanisms behind the acceleration of enzymatic saccharification were discussed.
