► A FMFC has been evaluated using EIS and current-time measurements. ► The FMFC which was floating on top of the ocean produced electricity for 153 days. ► The anode polarization resistance was a key factor determining the FMFC performance. ► A FMFC installed in a buoy should not be limited by the depth of the ocean.
