A new procedure for the hydrophobization of cellulose fibre using laccase and a hydrophobic phenolic compound

► We studied the potential of a new enzyme treatment for the internal sizing of paper. ► Pulp treatment with laccase in combination with lauryl gallate turns paper hydrophobic. ► The lauryl gallate is modified by laccase and is coupled onto cellulose fibres.
