Pre-learning stress that is temporally removed from acquisition exerts sex-specific effects on long-term memory

► We tested the effects of brief stress given 30 min before learning on 24-h memory. ► Stress had no significant effect on short-term memory. ► Cortisol Responders exhibited impaired recognition of neutral words. ► Male cortisol Responders exhibited impaired 24-h recall and recognition. ► Female cortisol Non-Responders exhibited impaired 24-h recognition.
