[Chol][Pro] was supported on different porous carbon materials. Subsequently, the catalytic activity of the heterogeneous systems in the Michael reaction between cyclohexanone and β-nitrostyrene was studied. Excellent conversions and high diasteroselectivities were attained by supporting [Chol][Pro] on the heat treated mesoporous carbons. The stability of the [Chol][Pro] and consequently, its catalytic activity were strongly influenced by the textural and surface chemical properties of the carbon supports.

► The catalytic activity in a Michael addition of [Chol][Pro] supported on carbon materials was studied.
► Mesoporous (raw, heated, oxidized) and microporous (heated) carbons were used as supports.
► Excellent conversions and high d.r. were attained with the catalytic system [Chol][Pro]/mesoporous heated.
► The textural and surface chemical properties of the support strongly affect the stability of [Chol][Pro].
