► Diol-column without charged functional groups can easily separate inorganic anions. ► Acidic eluent with the diol-stationary phase promoted anion separation. ► Retention of anions on the column was similar to that on an anion-exchange column. ► Retention times and resolution can be manipulated through the type of eluent used.
