Effects of probiotics on d-galactose-induced oxidative stress in plasma: A meta-analysis of animal models

This review evaluates the evidence from animal studies for the protective effects of probiotics administration on d-galactose-induced oxidative stress. Of 192 articles identified from Web of Science, Embase and PubMed, 8 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The studies included 280 mice in total. Estimates of plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were examined using Review Manager Version 5.3. Based on the standardised mean difference (SMD), beneficial effects of probiotics administration were observed in the intervention group compared to the d-galactose model as follows: SOD activity (SMD: 1.59; 95% CI: 0.67, 2.50, PÂ =Â 0.0007); GSH-PX levels (SMD: 2.93; 95% CI: 1.85, 4.02; PÂ <Â 10â5); and MDA content (SMD: â2.14; 95% CI: â3.24, â1.05; PÂ =Â 10â4). This review suggests that probiotics treatment has significant effects on serum SOD activity, GSH-PX activity and MDA content and reduces oxidative stress in aged model mice.
