Accidental blood exposure appears to be more frequent among medical laboratory staff than hospital nursing staff. Control measures were implemented later in laboratories than in hospital wards, and there is a continuing need for safety programs in all laboratories where potentially infectious materials are handled, with training, safe sharps disposal, blood exposure surveillance, implementation of safer practices based on Standard Precautions, use of protective equipment, and post-exposure management.
