Diagnosis of CMV visceral localisations is based on both virus presence in the affected organ and detection of the virus blood dissemination. The multidisciplinary approach using clinical examination, radiology or endoscopy, virology and histopathology enables distinction between viral disease and bystander effect. In such cases, the pathologist plays a crucial role. Histopathological diagnosis of viral pathogeny is indeed based on detection of in situ inclusion cells and viral antigen detection associated with more or less specific tissue lesions.
