The finding of a cytoplasmic staining during antinuclear antibodies screening by indirect immunofluorescence on HEp-2 cells is not unusual. Some of these patterns, suggesting particularly autoantibodies directed against actine, mitochondria, ribosomes, aminoacyl-ARNt synthetases or SRP (signal recognition particle) need further examination, first of all by indirect immuno-fluorescence on rodent tissue sections. Others are self-sufficient; such a case is given by anti-Golgi antibodies. And finally, sometimes an unusual pattern in localisation or appearance of the fluorescent labelling will lead to the discovery of a monoclonal component.
