A novel dansyl-based fluorescent probe for highly selective detection of ferric ions

► A novel dansyl-based fluorescent probe for iron ion was synthesized with high quantum yields. ► The fluorescent probe is photostable, pH insensitive and water soluble. ► The probe shows high selectivity and sensitivity towards iron ion. ► The fluorescent probe has the potential to detect iron ion visually.
