Determination of N,N-dimethyltryptamine in beverages consumed in religious practices by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography ion trap mass spectrometry

► N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a potent psychoactive indole alkaloid present in a variety of ritual beverages. ► This is the first use of SPME/GC-MS for the detection of DMT in psychoactive beverages. ► The determination of DMT present in vinho da jurema samples is also described for the first time. ► DMT concentrations in ayahuasca and vinho da jurema samples ranged from 0.10 to 1.81 g L−1.
