► A new fluorescence probe was reported for the detection of cyanide anion. ► The probe could detect cyanide in the presence of hydrogen sulfite and dicarbonate. ► The probe had low dependence on organic solvent. ► The concentration of cyanide anion that could be detected was as low as 1.0 μM.
