► New xanthine biosensors based on electroless deposition of gold and platinum nanoparticles on polyvinylferrocene coated Pt electrode were constructed for detection of xanthine. ► The applicabilities of the proposed biosensors to the drug samples containing xanthine derivatives were evaluated.
