► The thickness of membrane around an inclusion is calculated from continuum theory. ► A length scale for the perturbation is expressed in terms of material constants. ► We show that the perturbation decays as a damped oscillation. ► The line tension for inserting a membrane protein is calculated. ► Results are verified against molecular simulations.
