Power generation and contaminant removal in single chamber microbial fuel cells (SCMFCs) treating human urine

► 1 SCMFCs treating human urine were investigated for power production, contaminant removal, and nutrient recovery. ► First, cathodic precipitate lowered the power generation of SCMFCs. ► Second, SCMFCs effectively degraded COD in urine 60-75%. ► Third, N concentrations increased, while P and S concentrations decreased in SCMFCs. ► Forth, struvite was found in the precipitate of SCMFCs.
