► A critical review of 194 studies employing pure cultures was carried out. ► It was found that there are three types of co-culturing. ► Attaining technical and economic efficiencies is the reason for co-culturing. ► The advantages of thermophiles over mesophiles appear to be substrate-dependant. ► More sustainable feedstocks must be explored.
