The gut-to-brain axis plays a key role in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Gut nutritional information involves classical chemoreceptors but although mechanoreceptors, which are activated in response to gut contractions. Thus, most of messages sending from the gut and addressed to the hypothalamus have a nervous origin. The integration and modifications of neuronal activity in the hypothalamus affect the maintenance of blood glucose level. In pathological context, new concept has emerged which may contribute to improve hyperglycemia and insulin resistance of diabetic patients. In fact, therapeutic strategies propose to decrease duodenal contractions by targeting the enteric nervous system in order to (1) decrease intestinal glucose absorption and (2) restore gut-to-brain axis leading to favor glucose utilization.
