Analysis of tree sway and crown collisions for managed Pinus resinosa in southern Maine

► We present results of field experiment monitoring wind-driven sway of 16 pine trees. ► Stand of monitored trees was thinned from 1400 to 200 stems/ha. ► Heavy thin eliminated inter-crown collisions and increased sway displacement. ► To isolate effects of collision on sway displacement we employ scaling analysis. ► Scaling analysis indicates collisions act to stiffen the stand at the stand level.
