Drug functionalized microbial polysaccharide based nanofibers as transdermal substitute

Tissue engineered nanofibrous skin substitutes based on natural polymers have effective therapeutic potential for neo-tissue regeneration. These engineered nanofibers provide structural and chemical resemblance of natural extra cellular matrix (ECM) to dermal cells which in turn improves the treatment conditions for the patients suffering from skin damages. In the present investigation, for the first time, cytocompatible drug functionalized gellan based nanofibers were fabricated, characterized and evaluated for their potential as transdermal substitute. The biomimetic properties of gellan based nanofibers as well as their degradation lead to increase in glucuronic acid levels at wound site which in turn facilitate the cell proliferation, early remodeling and faster healing without scar formation.130
