Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) attenuates macrophage oxidative status: studies in PON1 transfected cells and in PON1 transgenic mice

PON1 directly reduced macrophage and aortic oxidative status, which was associated with decreased superoxide anion production and increased glutathione content. These phenomena could be responsible for the observed attenuated atherosclerosis development in PON1Tg mice in comparison to control mice.
