At last, a best understanding of chemotherapy molecular targets allowed the identification of genetic markers that can predict the response and/or the toxicity of anti-cancer drugs used in gastrointestinal cancers, which could be helpfull in the future to propose for each patient a personalized treatment. Mutations that can predict the response of new target therapies such as the ihnibitors of the c-KIT tyrosine kinase activity in gastrointestinal stromal tumors have also been found and will allow the selection of patients who can have benefit from these new therapeutic drugs.
