Chemical transfer energetics of the -CH2- group in aqueous glycerol: Solvent effect on hydrophobic hydration and its three-dimensional structure

Transfer Gibbs energies, ΔGt0 and entropies, ΔSt0 of -CH2- group have been evolved in aqueous glycerol by determining the same for a series of homologous alkyl carboxylates (RCOO−) of Ag+, alkyl ammonium (RNH3+) of Ph4B− (Ph = Phenyl) and α-amino acids (R′CH(NH3+)COO−) from solubility measurements of the solutes at different temperatures ranging from 15 to 35 °C. While ΔGt0(-CH2-) are shown to give a good measure of solvent effect on hydrophobic hydration (HbH), ΔSt0(-CH2-) reflects the 3D-structuredness of the solvent relative to that in water.
