Selective alkylation of phenol with tert-butyl alcohol catalyzed by Brönsted acidic imidazolium salts

SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids could be an efficient catalyst for the alkylation of phenol with tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and were found to catalyze this reaction with good conversion and selectivity.
