Le Grand Nord et la religion

RésuméLe Grand Nord, considéré comme la zone limite septentrionale de l'écoumène humain caractérisé par un climat de type arctique, s'est étendu jusqu'aux zones tempérées contemporaines lors des périodes glaciaires. Or l'Homme, animal issu des zones intertropicales, s'est répandu toujours plus loin dans le Grand Nord depuis deux millions d'années, affrontant, même en plein Glaciaire, d'exceptionnelles contraintes climatiques pour profiter d'une faune herbivore abondante. Peu après 30 000, il pénétrait profondément à l'intérieur du cercle arctique, tant en Europe qu'en Sibérie. C'est en pleine période glaciaire, dans le Grand Nord de l'Eurasie, qu'apparaissent pour l'archéologue les premiers indices de représentations religieuses ainsi que des innovations sociales et technologiques importantes. C'est également en passant par ce Grand Nord qu'il a pu accéder au continent américain.

The Far North, considered as the northern limit of the human ecumene characterized by an arctic climate, extended to contemporaneous temperate zones during glacial periods. Yet humans, an animal originating in intertropical zones, spread further in the Far North over 2 million years, confronting, even during full glacials, exceptional climatic constraints in order to take advantage of the abundant herbivores. Soon after 30,000, humans deeply penetrated within the Arctic Circle, both in Europe and Siberia. It was during the Last Glacial Maxium, in the Far North and Eurasia, that the first archaeological evidence for religious representations as well as significant social and technological innovations appeared. It was also via the Far North that the North American continent was reached.
