► Thermogravimetric analysis allows monitoring enzymatic bleaching. ► Laccase/HBT treatment degrades external layer of cellulose microfibril. ► Xylanase cleans microfibril surface, increasing the cellulose crystallinity. ► Xylanase pre-treatment improves the laccase effects.
