Actinoplanes utahensis ZJB-08196 fed-batch fermentation at elevated osmolality for enhancing acarbose production

► Actinoplanes utahensis ZJB-08196 could grow under moderate hyperosmolality up to 719 mOsm kg−1. ► A successful fed-batch fermentation process for acarbose production was constructed. ► Some components of feed acting as precursor provision and osmoprotection were found. ► This intermittent fed-batch culture produced a peak acarbose titer of 4878 mg l−1.
